What is workplace bullying? |
The problem of bullying has recently become a high profile issue in the workplace. Whilst there is no one stereotypical description of a bully, certain characteristics are typical of bullying behavior.
Bullies make their victims feel undermined and demeaned, often through a misuse of power or authority. Examples of bullying behavior include persistent negative comments being directed against you, verbal or physical threats, having your work targets constantly changed or being continually humiliated in front of other work colleagues. If someone specifically causes offence because of your religion, gender or ethnicity this is often termed as harassment, but the victimisation this behavior engenders is very closely linked to bullying.
Bullies often hold a position of power, but this is not always the case, and anyone, regardless of their position within an organisation, can be the subject of bullying. Bullying does not have to take place on a face-to-face basis either, it can also occur via email or over the telephone. It is very important to distinguish between bullying and strong management style, but if you genuinely feel that you are being singled out unfairly and you find the behavior intimidating or offensive then you may be the subject of bullying.
Bullying behavior tends to be an accumulation of small incidents over time. Often this is why bullying remains concealed for long periods: isolated incidents may appear to be minor, so the victim is reluctant to report what has been happening. If you are in this situation, the best advice is to record the date and offence caused by each incident – bullying behavior is often repetitive and petty by nature, so it is likely that, taken as a whole, your records will reveal the pattern of bullying.
The consequences of bullying can be serious not only to you as an individual, but also to the organisation as a whole. For the individual it can lead to stress-related illnesses and lack of confidence. For the organisation it can cause high absenteeism, high turnover, low morale as well as damage to reputation. Bullying in the workplace should be, and increasingly is, treated as a serious issue. |
